Iraqi politicians may have their (shall we say) faults, but they're learning faster than most when it's time to step aside.

Through a statement issued on his website, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has announced he is not likely not seek re-election after the end of his first full term in 2010.

The statement, as reported by CNN, says that Talabani "has expressed his willingness not to seek another presidential nomination... [but] it does not mean that he will withdraw from the political and partisan arena."

"President Talabani, on various occasions, sought to emphasize the importance and the need to devolve the power, tasks and responsibilities of leadership in the country to local authorities, especially at this stage when the country is going through political efforts by the parties to expand their bases."
