There were more babies born in 2007 than in any other year in the nation's history, with birth rates topping the 50-year old record set at the height of the baby boom.

Highlights from an AP round-up:

* 40% of these babies are born out of wedlock;

* Similarly high birth rates in 2006 add up to a two year "baby boomlet," but a bad economy means it probably won't last;

* Births are among all ages and demographics, though latinas are especially reproductive recently;

* Unmarried women in their 30s and 40s are having more children, and many are happily coupled;

* Bristol Palin is apparently "the poster child for what you do when you get pregnant now."
