The eyes of the world are on North Korea as it prepares to launch a communications satellite into orbit before April 8th -- thus proving the nation's ability to deploy long-range missiles which could carry nuclear warheads.

Japan has already deployed warships armed with interceptors to the waters East of the Korean peninsula. Today, they were joined by two US destroyers--USS McCain and the USS Chafee--which just held joint military exercises with the South Korean navy. South Korea itself is sending their own Aegis-equipped destroyer to the region.

Tensions between North Korea and other nations have heightened recently, as Pyongyang holds a South Korean industrial worker and two journalists employed by former US Vice President Al Gore. It was announced today that the journalists are set to stand trial. It has also threatened to treat any effort by Seoul to join international efforts to curb the North Korean nuclear program as an "act of war."
