North Korea defied the world Sunday morning, launching a rocket that other nations view as a ballistic missile test.

The rocket reached airspace over Japan in just seven minutes, but according to American and South Korean officials, landed in the Pacific ocean. North Korea, however, claims the rocket launched a satellite into orbit that is already broadcasting "patriotic songs."

The United States, Japan and South Korea had warned against the launch and all this week deployed warships to the region. Even China, Pyongyang's closest ally, urged North Korea in recent days to back down.

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting this afternoon in New York. While the United States, Britain and France are eager to take action against Pyongyang, China and Russia will most likely block any serious measures.
