The Italian city of L'Aquila "will be uninhabitable for some time," after the destruction brought upon it by a 6.3 magnitude, 30 second earthquake that leveled at least 3,000 buildings. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has declared a state of emergency in the area.

5,000 rescue workers, many armed only with their bare hands, are sifting through rubble in the hope of locating more survivors.

L'Aquila, population 70,000, is a walled medieval city, founded in the 13th century. Another 25 cities and towns (not including small villages,) were damaged by the quake.
