"A remarkable culture-shift has taken place around us," Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President R. Albert Mohler Jr. wrote in a recent column. "The most basic contours of American culture have been radically altered. The so-called Judeo-Christian consensus of the last millennium has given way to a post-modern, post-Christian, post-Western cultural crisis which threatens the very heart of our culture."

What's got Mohler crying in his Bible?

Since the year 1990, the number of Americans calling themselves religiously unaffiliated has risen from 8 percent to about 15 or 16, depending on the poll. Probably more alarming to him is a nearly fourfold increase in the ranks of self-proclaimed atheists over the same time. The boom has left the US home to roughly twice as many self-avowed atheists as Episcopalians.
