Wake up call or waste of time?

The hijacking of American container ship Maersk Alabama gave the 24-hour media everything that it loves: Good guys, bad guys, high drama (on the high seas, even,) unfolding in real time and a narrative that is, ultimately, unimportant.

Behind all the dramatics, however, is a story the world should be paying attention to: The rise of international piracy. The sharp increase in pirate attacks has made headlines around the world over the last two years. Just yesterday, the AFP ran a story on the rise, after German carrier Hansa Stavange was seized off the coast of Somalia.

Through all this, very little has been done to calm the waters. Off-coast piracy currently makes more money annually than the gross domestic product of Somalia.
