At some point before the 2006 elections that brought Democrats to power, Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-CA) was caught by NSA wiretaps offering to help get espionage-related charges against two American Israeli Public Affairs Committee officials in exchange for their lobbying soon to be Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Harman's behalf. Pelosi and Harman didn't get along, and Harman worried that Pelosi wouldn't name her Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, even though she was the ranking Democrat. Turns out, she was right.

The investigation into Harman's offer was dropped due to "lack of evidence." However, sources close to the probe now tell Congressional Quarterly that then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales actually intervened. Why? He "needed Jane" to defend the NSA's warrantless wiretap program.

Obviously inevitable update: She denies it.
