Manuel Rosales, mayor of Venezuela's second largest city, is seeking asylum in Peru. The South American politician is facing corruption charges back home. Rosales claims the accusations are politically motivated, and motivated by his opposition to Hugo Chavez in the 2006 election.

The charges are of multi-million dollar corruption during his time as governor of Zulia. But opposition lawmakers claim that the charges are part of a witch hunt to weed out Chavez challengers.

Many Chavez supporters claim Rosales supported an attempted coup in 2002. The mayor insists he misunderstood then-General-in-Chief Lucas Rincón's announcement that Chavez had resigned. The confession was later confirmed to have been forced--or fictional.
