The Sri Lankan government earlier this weekend rejected a ceasefire offer from the Tamil Tigers as a "gimmick." A flare-up of fighting between the army and guerrillas in the northern part of the nation has killed 6,500 and trapped 150,000 another civilians, according to the United Nations. For the moment, the government seems to have had a change of heart-for the most part.

Sri Lankan officials released a statement early on Monday, reading:

"Government of Sri Lanka has decided that combat operations have reached their conclusion. Our security forces have been instructed to end the use of heavy caliber guns, combat aircraft and aerial weapons which could cause civilian causalities.

"Our security forces will confine their attempts to rescuing civilians who are held hostage and give foremost priority to saving civilians."
