In the upcoming paperback edition of his new book, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) remembers this exchange with then-Senator Barack Obama:

"'That speech was phenomenal, Barack,' I told him. And I will never forget his response. Without the barest hint of braggadocio or conceit, and with what I would describe as deep humility, he said quietly: 'I have a gift, Harry.'"

Reid also implies that he encouraged Obama to run in 2008, and believed that he would win. Conventional wisdom at the time had House Speaker Nancy Pelosi backing Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid backing Hillary Clinton. Reid's son even ran Clinton's campaign in Nevada.
