In a 6-1 ruling that surprised virtually nobody, the California Supreme Court today upheld the state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Civil rights groups and even the state itself had argued that a constitutional revision was required to strip away the civil rights of a minority group.

Efforts went underway almost immediately to put gay marriage back on the California ballot. "We must resolve to overturn this decision," San Francisco Mayor and Gubernatorial hopeful Gavin Newsom said in a statement. "Let this work start today."

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi offered her support to the effort. "I have long fought for equality for all of California’s families," she said soon after the ruling was announced, "and will strongly support efforts to restore marriage equality in California."
